HOW TO ANSWER THE “SELL ME THIS PEN” QUESTION?

Before we answer this question, we first need to know why the question is asked in the first place. Why?

1.     The Interviewer is assessing your sales abilities and approach to selling.

2.     The interviewer want to see how confident you are when you are put on the spot

Part of what you should not do when answering this question is that you should not talk about the benefits of the pen and how good its quality is. For example, “this is a great pen, it is smooth and it has a great feel!”

3 STEPS PROCESS TO ANSWER CONFIDENTLY

1.     Create demand: Ask the interviewer how often they use a pen. They might answer “I don’t use one that often, to be honest”. Then you say “You’re clearly a man of success, am I right in assuming you will sometimes use a pen to sign important sales and employment contracts?” They will answer “Yes, that’s correct”. Then you respond “By the way you have conducted this interview, and the professional manner in which it is been run, I assume you are someone who likes things to be done to a professional standard, is that correct?” They will answer, “Yes, you could say that.

2.     Sales pitch: Further, you will initiate your sales pitch, you will say something like “Every time you sign a sales contract, it’s a reminder of how hard you have worked to get to this point” and add “Every time you sign an employment contract it’s a sign you have taken the time to pick the right person for the job”, having captured the likely department the interviewer is specialized, then you say “Now of course you could use a standard pen that will not cost much, but surely, a person who has achieved so much in their career deserves to use a pen that symbolizes their success, would you agree?”, they will say, “well I can’t really argue with that, yes”

3.     Close the sale: To close the sale, you say “I want you to have this pen for 30 days for free, try it, use it, and every time you sign a sales contract or an employment contract, think of how good it feels to use something that is to the same quality and high standard as the work you constantly deliver”. Then to close you say “At the end of the 30-day trial, I am convinced you will want to buy this pen, do we have a deal?”

Following these steps you are assured of at least 80 percent score form the interviewer. My advice is that you practice these steps while coming with better ways of sentence arrangement. You can share what you have with me in the comment section.
